Hey, dad. As you know, many of the writers at the back of his book make a clear distinction between forgiveness and forgetting. We can not ever forget the horror, and perhaps we can never forgive the destruction and pain. But we can carve a space out to find forgiveness for ourselves--at our shortcomings and at our own inability to get beyond our pasts. For we only have today, and we must not waste precious moments in regret.

I have heard from so many readers about this particular column. Clearly, it is an issue that resonates with so many of us, and one with which we wrestle regularly. One reader commented that forgiveness allows us to remove the rust from our hearts. We can then meet each person with an open mind and loving heart--and can put the need to be "right" aside. When I search for the Divine in those I don't understand or distrust, it helps me to get in touch with the fact that there are invariably parts of me that others don't understand. I hope they, too, will see the spirit of light in me and move beyond distrust and needing to be "right." It is not easy, to be sure, but it is a path that can lead towards more contentment and love.

Becca
Thanks again for speaking up for libraries during NLW. Unfortunately it was overshadowed by the horrific events in Boston and Watertown. The long anticipated launch of the Digital Public Library of America on April 18 was affected too with the cancellation of the public ceremony event scheduled for Boston Public Library. It has been rescheduled for the Fall. DPLA is an amazing attempt to digitize the world's knowledge--not in a Google way, which is private and perhaps temporary--but to digitize and create a public access portal to the wealth of information we own as a global community. See http://dp.la/

I am going to link to your blog in my weekly eNews. Many thanks

Bravo for libraries!.. I remember signing my first library card when I was three and could only write three letters in my name. Libraries are so important. Great column. ... and having also begun writing a blog a year ago, I share many of these experiences. It's also such good discipline to have a deadline.
