Breaking down social media by age
The Future Journalism Project posted a fantastic graphic this morning, which breaks down the usage of 19 popular social networking tools (like Facebook, Twitter, Friendster and Stumbleupon) and shows the demographics for each site through color-coded bars.
Five things I noticed:
-- Most popular with the 17 and under crowd? Bebo.
-- Most popular with the 45 and up demographic? Classmates.com.
-- Facebook has a broad appeal among all demographics.
-- Sites with the broadest appeal to general adults (25-44) include Reddit, Friendfeed and Slashdot.
-- Myspace still exists(?).
From a journalism perspective, it's interesting to see who's using what in terms of targeting a news audience.
